Ministry

"Last Tangle in Paris"

Live 2012 DeFiBrilLaTour

13th Planet Records/UDR Music

Written by "S"

In over 30 years of existence Al Jourgensen has been set in stone as the Godfather of Metal’s Industrial Revolution. Produced by “Wife-ager” (now ex, at the time of writing this) Angelina Lukacin Jourgensen & Directed by Zach Passero, ”Last Tangle in Paris” is the latest & possibly the final release by Jourgensen's brainchild, MINISTRY through 13th Planet RecordsUDR Music. This live concert compilation consists of a 2-CD & DVD, covering live performances between 2006 - 2012.

The audio portion of this compilation covers the Six-time Grammy nominated group’s 2006’s “MasterBa’Tour”, 2008’s “C-U-La’Tour” and their coup-de-grace, 2012’s “DeFiBriLa’Tour”. Covering some of the hits from 1989’s “The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste”, 2004’s “Houses of the Mole”, 2006’s “Rio Grande Blood”, 2012’s “Relapse” - including the Grammy nominated tunes "NWO", "LiesLiesLies" & "Senor Peligro". If you never had an opportunity to see them live, this awesome collection of songs really captures their live element well and is as close as you’ll get to the energy flowing between the crowd & the band. It’s something you really needed to experience first-hand as Jourgensen has shared the stage with some great names including Tommy Victor (Prong), Burt C. Bell (Fear Factory), Tony Campos (Static-X, Asesino, Soulfly)- just to name a few.

The video portion is very nostalgic as it captures some great special elements, highlighting the 2012 “DeFiBriLa’Tour”. Accompanying Uncle Al on stage is Casey Orr (Gwar, Warbeast, Rigor Mortis) on bass, Aaron Rossi (Prong, Ankla) on drums, John Bechdel (Killing Joke, Fear Factory) on keyboards & on guitars is Sin Quirin (Revolting Cocks, Society 1) & in what would be his final performances with the group, Michael Ralph Scaccia on lead guitar.

We get some awesome behind-the-scenes footage from live rehearsals leading up to the tour, to the recording studio where Quirin & Scaccia lay down some work for the 2013 release “From Beer to Eternity”.  Along with great camera work covering MINISTRY’S live performance, we are gifted great one-on-one interviews with the group & crew, talking a bit about their time with Scaccia.

Filmed between June & July at The Vic Theatre in Chicago, IL & La Cigale in Paris (respectively), the DVD begins with footage of the crew hard at work setting up the stage, sound & instruments for the show.  From the young goth-girls to the veteran old-school rockers, you get a nice view of the diverse crowd that MINISTRY brings to a show & no concert DVD would be complete without footage of the band arriving to the venue, just minutes before hitting the stage, with Uncle Al providing a nice friendly greeting of, ”…eat my shit…”. We get some entertaining banter within the group & crew, sharing “war-stories” & an “awe" inspiring moment as we see Scaccia, fingers flying, warming up.

As Team Ministry heads to the stage, Jourgensen's intro to "Ghouldiggers" (the opening track to “Relapse”) is played to the crowd & from then on in, your eyes sort of stayed glued to the screen. The bounce between the stage & rehearsals is cleverly put together throughout the DVD. There are some great views of the whole group, together & individually, like some nice guitar-shredding shots between Scaccia & Quirin, to a perfectly placed drum-cam for Rossi. My only concern & pet-peeve, besides a mild crowd, was the live audio & video were out of sync at times, but I know the “99%ers” (pun intended) won’t care or notice.

Without giving too much away, the setlist is really well put together with a mix in support for “Relapse” & some of the older songs, especially the last half hour of the DVD really hits home. Really good one-on-one interviews with members of the group paint a good picture of the time they had with Scaccia.  Recording engineer, Sammy D’Ambruoso shares with us his final moments with Scaccia  in late December before Scaccia left the 13th Planet Compound. Scaccia took a trip to Texas where he would collapse on-stage during a live performance with his long-time thrash group RIGOR MORTIS.

“Last Tangle in Paris” captures a great feeling in what may be the final chapter in MINISTRY. Giving the great history of the man, Jourgensen & some of the great artists he has shared the stage with - watching such a talent in that of Scaccia, you get to witness 2 greats on stage sharing a time for not only themselves but for an audience of both new & old fans. In over 3 decades having created such a genre defining entity, this CD/DVD compilation is a great attempt at capturing the awesomeness of some of their best live performances of Uncle Al  & MINISTRY.

MASSACRE

BACK FROM BEYOND

CENTURY MEDIA RECORDS

MASSACRE is BACK FROM BEYOND releasing their 3rd full-length album by way of Century Media. Gracing the talents of artist Toshihiro Egawa on the cover (a slight continuation of the cover art from 1991’s FROM BEYOND by Edward Repka), are 13 tracks (+1 intro) of Floridian Death Metal. Some, or many for that matter, might concern themselves with the absence of original vocalist Kam Lee, but this shouldn’t over-shadow the fact that Terry Butler (DEATH, OBITUARY, SIX FEET UNDER) returns since his absence from 1996’s PROMISE, leaving Rick Rozz as the only long-standing member. Making their presence felt are latest members Edwin Webb on vocals and Mike Mazzonetto on drums, both having only appeared on the previously released EP (2012) CONDEMENED TO THE SHADOWS, of which all 2 tracks appear on BACK FROM BEYOND.

Rozz’ songwriting grooves real well with the rhythm section of Butler and Mazzonetto backing him up, all rounded out by a successful vocal effort by Webb. My favorite tracks from this album are “False Revelations”, “The Evil Within”, “Shield of the Sun" and the title track – all which highlight MASSACRE’S style., not to mention “Honor the Fallen” which pays tribute to the late, great Jeff Hanneman (RIP).

MASSACRE is sticking to its roots with the thick crunching sound that they're known for, not feeling the need to over-polish or over-produce with BACK FROM BEYOND as a demonstration of Old School Death Metal still holding ground in a time where bands are over-exerting themselves (and the fans) with scales, arpeggios, convulsive drumming and mathematic rhythms. Don’t get me wrong, I love the evolution of what Extreme Metal has come to be., but BACK FROM BEYOND gives you a break from all that with tunes that remind you why you got into Death Metal in the first place.

COMEBACK KID

DIE KNOWING

VICTORY RECORDS

COMEBACK KID ARE:

Kyle Profeta - Drums

Andrew Neufeld - Vocals

Jeremy Hiebert - Guitar

Stuart Ross - Guitar

Bringing forward the modern edge of hardcore punk are the Canadiens known as Comeback Kid (named after hockey great Mario Lemieux's comeback to hockey) with their fifth effort DIE KNOWING (Victory Records). Only about a decade old, this four-piece is straight to the point with their short tunes, (the opening track being the longest at 4:07) with a commercial new school sound with echos of the old-school, painting a good picture of a younger generation easily relating to this singing and dancing, east coast-style. Die Knowing is a good mix of the fast punk and slow groove oriented hardcore. The heaviest and fastest tunes I’d recommend are “Lower The Line”, “I Depend, I Control”, “Beyond”, and “Full Swing” featuring ex-vocalist, Scott Wade. So whether you’re diehards/fans of Sick Of It All or a New School fan who likes Hatebreed, It has something for everyone and definitely worth a listen.
